How Porta is Shaping Sustainable Timber Manufacturing

At Porta, sustainability isn't just a word. It's about continually working to reduce our impact. From the way we source our timber to how we manufacture and deliver our products; sustainability guides every decision. As part of the Borg group, we continue to invest in technology, people and processes that ensure timber remains one of the world’s most renewable and responsible building materials.

Two key pillars support our commitment to a greener future: our Chain of Custody certifications and the innovation taking place at Porta’s Bridgewater timber mill in Tasmania. Together, they demonstrate how we are building a sustainable future for our industry, our customers and our communities.

Chain of Custody: Timber You Can Trust

When it comes to choosing timber, origin matters as much as performance. Porta proudly holds FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) Chain of Custody certifications, ensuring full traceability from forest to final product.

For our customers, this means complete peace of mind; knowing that every Porta product is made from timber sourced from responsibly managed and legally harvested forests.

Chain of Custody certification ensures:

  • Sustainable forestry that protects biodiversity and supports regeneration.
  • Transparency and accountability across the entire supply chain.
  • Ethical sourcing that meets strict environmental and social standards.

For architects and builders, it helps meet certified project requirements. For homeowners, it represents a conscious choice that supports the long-term health of our forests.

Bridgewater Timber Mill: Sustainability in Action

Our Bridgewater timber mill in Tasmania sits at the heart of Porta’s Tasmanian Oak production. It stands as a working model of how renewable energy, efficient resource use and community engagement can come together to drive real environmental progress.

Renewable Energy Investment

Bridgewater is home to one of Tasmania’s largest rooftop solar systems, which offsets around 60 per cent of the site’s total energy use. This investment reduces greenhouse gas emissions and operational costs while powering sustainable manufacturing.

Efficient Use of Timber Resources

Over 95 per cent of timber by-products are repurposed. Wood chips support the pulp and paper industry, sawdust is used for fuel or pellet production, and offcuts are recycled through local community initiatives.

Supporting Local Communities

The mill contributes timber to men’s sheds, community gardens and local projects, supporting skills development, wellbeing and circular economy outcomes.

This integrated approach ensures timber is used to its fullest potential while actively supporting both people and the planet.
