At Porta, sustainability isn't just a word. It's about continually working to reduce our impact. Our Oberon facility, located in regional New South Wales, stands as a symbol of that commitment. Now home to Australia’s largest rooftop solar PV system, the site demonstrates how renewable energy can drive industrial performance while reducing environmental impact.
Installed on the roof of Porta’s advanced manufacturing site in Oberon, the 10MW solar system represents one of the most ambitious renewable energy projects of its kind. Spanning the equivalent of eight football fields (around 8 hectares), the system comprises more than 27,000 solar panels that collectively generate enough electricity to power thousands of homes each year.
This investment reinforces Porta’s long-term vision for sustainable manufacturing. Oberon is one of the most sophisticated production facilities in the region, manufacturing high-quality particleboard and MDF panels that form the foundation of Porta’s structural and decorative timber ranges. By integrating large-scale renewable energy into our operations, we are reducing our carbon footprint while strengthening our role as an industry leader in responsible production.
Delivered in partnership with Earth connect, a Newcastle-based engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) provider, the Oberon rooftop solar system was completed in two stages over two years, reaching full generation capacity in early 2022.
The first stage featured a 2MW installation, including 6,000 solar panels and 28 x 50kW inverters. Building on that success, the second stage added 8 MW of capacity, with 21,000 additional panels connected via 45km of mounting rail and 53 x 110kW inverters.
Together, these systems now generate 14GWh of clean electricity each year, reducing carbon emissions by up to 15,000 tonnes annually: a significant contribution to Australia’s transition towards renewable energy.
The Oberon project is part of Porta’s growing solar portfolio across Australia. In total, 53,967 solar panels have been installed across our national network of facilities, producing 17.66 million kWh of renewable energy each year and reducing carbon emissions by nearly 12,000 tonnes.
This includes a 1.3MW solar installation at our Charmhaven site and 2.1MW of solar generation across two facilities in Somersby, all contributing to Porta’s broader goal of achieving sustainable, energy-efficient manufacturing at scale.
These initiatives reflect Porta’s proactive approach to vertical integration and industrial sustainability, connecting energy generation, production and local community growth. By investing in renewable infrastructure, Porta continues to strengthen its environmental credentials while supporting regional economies through job creation, trade opportunities and long-term investment.
Porta’s vision extends beyond energy efficiency. The integration of solar power across our manufacturing network represents a shift towards a circular, low-carbon economy, where production is both responsible and resource-conscious.
By combining local manufacturing expertise with renewable technology, Porta is helping shape a future where Australian-made products are built not only for quality but also for environmental integrity.
The Oberon solar project stands as a powerful example of what can be achieved when innovation meets responsibility, proving that sustainable manufacturing and industrial excellence can go hand in hand.

Sustainability means reducing our impact. Porta’s Bridgewater sawmill uses one of the largest solar systems, cutting emissions and boosting efficiency.
