Reusable Retail Design Powered by STRUCTAply™ Square Edge

The ANZ retail space designed by Breathe Architects showcases how circular design principles can be embedded into commercial interiors without compromising performance or efficiency.

At the centre of the project is XFrame, a reusable wall framing system designed to be assembled, dismantled and reconfigured with minimal waste. STRUCTAply® Square Edge was selected as the structural plywood component, supporting precision fabrication, durability and long-term reuse.

The Design Challenge

Retail fitouts are traditionally temporary, generating significant material waste during refurbishment cycles.

The brief for the ANZ project required:

• A fully demountable framing system
• Efficient material use with minimal sheet waste
• Rapid on-site installation
• Structural reliability
• A low-impact material solution aligned with circular economy principles

The system needed to perform structurally while enabling future disassembly without damage to the core materials.

The Porta Solution

STRUCTAply® Square Edge was integrated into the XFrame system as CNC-cut structural framing components.

Advanced nesting software ensured efficient sheet utilisation, with between three and five framing elements produced per sheet depending on thickness and load requirements. From a single sheet, approximately 1.9 square metres of framing could be generated, maximising yield and reducing offcuts.

• Accurate CNC machining
• Clip-on component assembly
• Fast installation in a matter of days
• Full disassembly without material damage
• Long-term reusability

The system allows meeting spaces, kitchen areas and customer zones to be reconfigured over time, extending material life and reducing waste.

Sustainability, Circularity & Australian Manufacturing

STRUCTAply® Square Edge is manufactured at Porta using sustainably grown Australian plantation pine.

By sourcing plantation-grown timber and manufacturing locally, Porta supports responsible forestry and reduces reliance on imported products, lowering transport-related carbon emissions.

The durability and dimensional stability of STRUCTAply® Square Edge make it well suited to circular construction systems such as XFrame. Rather than being demolished at the end of a tenancy, the materials are dismantled and reused, sequestering carbon for longer and minimising embodied waste.

Locally manufactured supply also provides consistency and reliability for commercial projects, supporting repeatable system deployment across multiple locations.
