IMBY (In My Back Yard) is a compact, prefabricated modular structure designed to respond to the evolving needs of modern living. Conceived by Adriano Pupilli and his team, the project explores how thoughtful architecture, traditional craftsmanship and precision manufacturing can come together in a flexible, sustainable building system.
STRUCTAply® Square Edge was central to the outcome, providing structural integrity, design versatility and material efficiency throughout the build.
The Design Challenge
The IMBY concept set out to achieve multiple objectives within a modest footprint:
- Create a modular system that could be added to, reconfigured or relocated
- Suit small urban backyards and garden settings
- Meet Exempt Development planning requirements
- Be efficient to transport and assemble
- Balance sustainability with affordability
The structure needed to be lightweight, durable and visually refined, while remaining practical to fabricate and install.
The Porta Solution
STRUCTAply® Square Edge was specified for the structural frame and exposed internal surfaces, allowing the plywood to become both structure and finish.
Ancient timber joinery techniques, including the traditional tusk-tenon joint, were integrated into the design, connecting horizontal and vertical members without reliance on excessive fixings. Combined with computer-controlled CNC cutting, this approach ensured precision nesting within standard 1200 x 2400mm sheet sizes, minimising material waste.
Lightweight and versatile, STRUCTAply® Square Edge supported:
- Efficient prefabrication and transport
- Flat-pack assembly and disassembly
- Structural reliability with exposed detailing
- Reduced material waste through optimised sheet layouts
- A clean, natural timber aesthetic
The result is a system where structure and architecture are expressed as one.
